Movie Review: 5 Reasons To See COLOMBIANA

I finally went to see Colombiana, a movie about a young woman (Cataleya, played by Zoe Saldana) who grows up to become an assassin, after witnessing her parents’ murder… and I must say- I loved it! Sure there were a few “Oh Really? I’m supposed to believe that’s how it would go down in real life?” moments… but once you allow yourself to accept the possibility that a little girl can out maneuver by foot– trained armed gangsters on wheels… You’d be surprised how wide your imagination can grow.

Here are 5 elements I enjoyed most about this film:

1. Everyone was referring to the cereal killer as a “He” before they began putting things together- No one expected the skillful killer to be a woman… Got to love it!

2. Cataleya was kicking a** and shooting at people one minute– then sexy and soft the next minute– without skipping a beat. [Though I wonder if I'd be so surprised by how natural this felt if it were a male lead? Hmmm... probably not.]

3. There was a Paula Patterson/Robert Thicke relationship that just was… no “you got jungle fever” dialogue. Plus I liked that in the middle of all the “revenge seeking”– there was romance! This element fed the “love” side of my brain.

4. I’ll be the first to admit that straight action flicks usually don’t do it for me. I have to genuinely care about the characters, and the storyline in this movie definitely made me care about Cataleya. I even found myself cheering whenever she hit her mark… hehehe

5. I didn’t realize it till the movie was almost over- but most of the main characters were people of color (Black and Hispanic)- And guess what? The movie wasn’t based around a reunion, a wedding, or some story line that brought all the minorities to one place.

And at the end of the day this film was highly entertaining and full of suspenseful fight scenes. What more can you ask from an Action/Adventure movie?

Did you see this film? What did you think? Did the same elements I loved– stand out for you?
