Multimedia Journalist

My bio: Veralyn Williams has a B.A. in Media Studies from Hunter College, and is currently a Multimedia Freelance Journalist working in New York City. She has spent 4 years at WNYC Radio working with various departments including: Radio Rookies, Culture, News, and Freakonomincs. Also freelancing for Black Enterprise, BronxNet Television, Bedsider.org, SexReally.com, and The Museum for African Art. She is also Social Secretary and Co-Founder of Telem Center for the African Child, a nonprofit providing underserved children of African descent an opportunity to celebrate their cultural heritage. As a participant of WNYC’s Radio Rookies, Ms. Williams’ journalism work has won the 65TH Annual Peabody Award and the 2007 Regional RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award. Through all of her endeavors she aims to give a voice to perspectives that are often forgotten in the media.

Youth Media Consultant

As a product of youth media, I can personally testify to how giving a young person the tools to tell their own stories— can empower them to take control in other areas of their lives. And I am very passionate about giving that same opportunity to as many students as possible.

This year I have independently planned and taught two separate Media Workshops, which I customized to the needs of the program.

Museum of African Art Youth Ambassadors, 5-Week Digital Media Workshop

What you get when you hire me? A dynamic, energetic, and take charge teacher, who can relate to teens— while also help and direct them to the finish line of their media projects.

While conducting a workshop I will:

  • teach students the different elements to a story.
  • teach students how to get started developing their story idea.
  • train students to use video and audio equipment (Equipment not provided by me)
  • teach students to conduct 1on1 interviews and on the street interviews.
  • teach students to record sounds and/or B-Roll.
  • teach students to write scripts for radio and/or video.
  • train students to edit their work using best editing program to fit workshop’s need.

  • ‎#BlackHistoryMonth Moment: The Green Bay Massacre was a covert operation on January 5, 1978, in which 5 Jamaica Labour Party supporters were shot dead at the Green Bay Firing Range by members of the Military Intelligence.
